Harlan of Harveysburg was an uncle. She was granddaughter of Nathan Harlan
mentioned on pg. 657 Clinton Co. History of 1882.
Amanda Harland Thompson mother of Ida May, was born July 7, 1842 and died
March 30, 1926. In May 1860 she married James F. Thompson of Oregonia, O.

Amos HIATT, A.M., the senior principle of Hiatt Brothers Academy, was born November 23, 1843 in Highland Co., OH. Her came to Iowa in the fall of 1857. He was a faithful soldier in the Federal Army in Company D 33rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served until the close of the War. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenent in 1864 and during that year had command of the company. He enlisted in Oskaloosa, hence his military record does not appear in the Johnson Co. Roll of Honor. He came to Iowa City in 1866, entered the State University shortly after and graduated in 1870. He was principal of the Public Schools of Brooklyn in Poweshiek County, IA from 1872 to 1873. Superintendent of the Public Schools of Johnson Co. from 1876 to 1877. He taught mathematics 2 terms in the State University after graduating. He married Aug. 18, 1870 to Miss Elma A. Sanders of Iowa City, Iowa. He was formerly a member of the Quaker Church and joined the ME Church in Iowa City in 1870.
Amos Hiatt Jr. lived in Iowa City, IA and attended the University there. Here he met Elma Sanders, also a college student adn after they graduated in 1870 they married. They lived in Iowa City and here their two sons were born. Allen was born, then Richard on July 15, 1873. Elma died and afterwards Amos Jr. went to Des Moines and taught school. He was principal of Jr. High (There is a school named after him in Des Moines) Here he met Vida Otis, born April 10, 1896 and died March 23, 1927. Amos and Vida came to Ceres, CA about 1902 and bought land. Vida died at Cereson Aug. 25, 1918. Amos died in Washington State while visiting his son, Allen.

"...We have changed the parents of Susan Pickerell. This is based on some late information we have just discovered in a book on Logan Co. which we ran across at the Iowa Historical Building last Wednesday. We also feel there are two corrections that need to be made in your pedigree charts on the Hiatt family. We know that Amos Hiatt, Sr. was active in the Friends Cemetery in Oskaloosa, along with his wife, Lydia. It is located immediately northeast of Penn College. We are enclosing a picture of his headstone and we have visited his grave several times..."
