Bertha Elizabeth was raised by Francis's sister Rebecca and her husband
Charles Weatherston.
The following are parts of letters written to June Hull Greenhalgh, wife of
Keith Greenhalgh, grandson of Francis Marion Hiatt.
Jan 18, 1955.
Dear June and Family,
The Mr. Stanford you spoke of , (now Deceased) was my mothers brother. They
went to Canada to live a long time ago. He has been here to see me a few times
as he came to Salt Lake to Conference (LDS).
Yes, my mother Elizabeth Stanford and Keiths grandmother Alice Catherine
Jenkins were full cousins. My grandmother was a Jenkins, a sister to Keiths
great grandfather Ephraim Wills Jenkins. She married Alfred Stanford who was
my grandfather. I suppose you know that my mother died when I was two years
old, and I was reared by my aunt and uncle, Charles and Rebecca Weatherston. I
would not have known any other parents if they had not taught me about my own
parents.
Father Hiatt always lived some where near us so we were always togeather
more or less.
Lovingly, Aunt Bertha
Dear June,
I was interested in the letter you sent. The Jesse L. Stanford who wrote
the letter was my mothers youngest brother. He also come to see me while I was
in the hospital. He came this way as he was on his way home to Canada. When
they went to find me he heard I was in the hospital so they came up there. His
wife and daughter were with him. I had not seen him since I was a little girl,
so I did not know him, but I was glad to have them come. He told me about the
Temple work they were doing and said he had some information on the Jenkins
line, so I am going to try to get what he has when I get able to do some of
that work.
Grandmother Stanford died when I was just a little girl, I can just
remember it and not much about it. Grandfather never married again and his
daughter Ruth kept house and always took care of him even when she married he
went to live with her.
Mother Weatherston used to take me to see my grandfather once in a while
and always taught me who my mothers people were. We moved to Oregon and most
of the Stanford family went to Canada so we were widely separated and did not
see each other for a long time.
