From a letter to Mrs. David Hiatt of Pierre SD, dtd Oct 24 1966.
Grant City, MO
Oct 24, 1966
Mrs. Hiatt
I read your letter in Cappers Weekly about Stark Brothers Nurseries and hte apple tree cuttings.
I am also a relative of Jesse Hiatt, I am sixty five and have lived in north west mo. all my lfe, there are four off us Hiatts here in North County, our grandfather's name was also David.
We have held several family reunions at New Market, Iowa nad we were the only ones with the Hiat last name. It sems that the descndants of our great uncle Columbus Hiatt were all girls except one, William, who passed away in Oklahoma several years ago. WE have been to the farm north of New Market several times and viewed the Plague where the tree grew. There is an inscription on the marger telling about what you read in the Cappers about it. Also an iron fence around it.
Jesse was a great uncle of my fathers (whose name was William Terrill)
My father helped write the genealogy of the Hiatts, the book has been printed but I do not have one. Am trying to get one, have a cousin in Kansas City who has read it and thinks he can get one for me, he say it brings the Histroy down to the present generation.
I have a sister (Mrs. Helen May) Jefferson, Iowa, who has our own family history back about three generation, we would both from you telling us something about yourself.
We are all farmers, down here not wealthy but moderatly well fixed, our own farms I never and are still active, I never knew a HIATT to retire, although most of us are Social Security age.
The Hiatts in North West Mo. and South West Iowa seem to be interested in growing things are noted for their own good gardens & orchards. I guess those old genes carry on. Your 5th, 6th or 7th cousin, Carl Hiatt
