Much of my contemporary Hiatt information was obtained from David Elroy
Hiatt, who lived in Pierre, SD.
Dave wrote a fairly lengthy compact history of the Hiatt's as far as he
understood. Included are some notes he wrote
David Hiatt, LaVerle Donald Lake Andes, S.D.

Received call from Darrel Simonds 4/18/91 that he got word that David Hiatt
died about a month ago at Sturgis, SD Vets Hospital. Called Betty Simonds
Winkler same day to confirm: she read out obituary notice for date and place of death. No place of burial mentioned, so Betty believes he was cremated. She also confirmed names of his wife and children from obituary.

David Hiatt Eulogy by Dwight Hiatt
This of course a very emotional time for all of us so I decided I would
write dads eulogy and then read it to you.
In remembrance of my dad, I'll try to keep it brief. He would have
preferred it that way, and honestly probably so will most of us.
My mother and I were blasted from our sleep this morning tot he sound of
the Rolling Stones rock group. I am staying with my mother during this time
since I had to travel to Pierrce from Gillette Wyoming to be with her during
this time of grief.
Contractors have been working on the apartment building and one of them
apparantly thought we would all enjoy his music.
I was actually looking for a glass or something to throw at him because I wasn't sure he could hear me. Not finding anything appropriate. I very much in the David Hiatt tradition, yelled at him to turn that noise off. Which he promptly did. Dad would have approved perhaps there are people who would be difficult to eulogize because it would be hard to find enough good things to say about them. I had the opposite problem I found so very much good it was difficult to know exactly what to include.
One thing I noticed during all of our many family meetings that the talk
would inevitably turn to some fond or humerous memory of dad.
I think I'll leave it at that, all of his friends all of his family each
has their own way individual fond memory of dad. It is easy to say that,
because I know it is true.
Dad wasn't perfect, like any person, he had weaknesses, problems of life,
sickness and all ofthe things any other man has to deal with in their life.
But with just a little understanding one could easily see that he had a heart
of gold. He was alwyas available, he was always there, for the family. He
was alwyas responsible financially. He was a hard worker in whatever he did.
He always cared
My family would like to thank each and every one of yoru for having had a
part in my dads life. And now at the time of his passing, we say "farewell" to him I leave you with the great compliment to my father that I can think of and that is to be as much like him as I can in his good qualities. That would be a great tribute to my father.
Through the years many a minister probably tried to disuade my father from
something he was doing or persuade him to do something he wasn't doing. And
though my father was not a really deeply religious man, I nevertheless am
certain that he will make a quick entrance into the Kingdom of God at the
resurrection.
