Walter was adopted by Charles and Bertha Myers in 1920. They changed his
name to Paul Walter Myers.
Baby Left on Porch.
Honey Creek, Ind. April 21, 1 Baby boy, about three months old, was left
in a basket at the front door of the home of Charles Myers, local merchant,
last night. At about 8:30 o'clock someone was heard knock on the door and when
Mr. Myers went to the door, found the basket containing the baby. An
automobile was seen going down the road. Mr. and Mrs. Myers ar already wrapped
up in the little fellow and plan to keep him. In fact Mr. Myers had named him
Paul.
Petition to Adopt Babe left on Myers Verandah April 19. 1921
Two months ago the leaving of a baby boy on the verandah of the home of
Charles R. and Bertha Myers of Honey Creek, was the cause of considerable
comment.
The fining of this infant was not an unwelcome find, and the baby was
taken into the home and hearts of Mr. and Mrs. Myers, who now petion the court
for its legal adoption as their child and heir-at-law and that the name of the
child be changed from Paul Hiatt to Paul Myers.
There is an interesting story connected with the placing of this baby at
the Myers home on the evening of April 19, and the best of it is that the story
is said to be true; Mr and Mrs. Myers had been desirous of adopting a child,
and they had seen this one, and just naturally took a liking to the little
bundle of innocency, but did not know that its parents were willing to part
with it.
But friends of the Myers family knew the facts, and on the evening as
stated they got the baby, put it in a basket and left it on the veranhad as
stated. The friends then remained near, but in seclusion, to see the outcome,
and when Mr. and Mrs. Myers took the basket in, they knew it had a home, and so
reported to the parents.
Their devotion to the baby while the court room Wednesday attracted the
attention of many persons.
