We were always glad to see him come."
Twin of Robert Wilson Hiatt. According to Paul Hiatt of Amelia, son of
Arther Hiatt: "Dad said Grandfather was a twin and that his mother died when
he was born. He was raised by his uncle Daniel Hiatt.
He also said that his dad said that there was an elderly lady of the
Roberds family who was related to them living nearby. Don't know what
relationship."

There are numerous Steve Hiatt's in Mt. Airy, N.C. This is about the one
who lived in a small section called Sheltontown. His father W. Harvey Hiatt
had a radio-T.V. repair shop and taught at the High School in later years.
His mom, Alma, worked at WSYD radio station and later as secretary for David L.
Hiatt attorney and Patriarch for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints. Steve was raised a member of this "Mormon" religion, and served a
full-time mission for the church in Germany in 1965. In High School, Steve was
a guard on the football team nicknamed "Brigham" was "player of the week". He
also was active in basketball, track and baseball. He worked at Enman's
hamburger drive-in for a while.
Steve graduated from BYU with a B.A. in Socilolgy, minor in German. While
at BYU, just after returning from his mission he heard a talk in church by
Darlene Straup and later was her dance partner for a floor show at a school
dance. They dated steadily and became engaged within 6 weeks. They were
married 3 months later from the time they first met. They supported themselves
by being janitors from 4-7 A.M. at YU, cleaning the PE Bldg and fieldhouse.
Did set up for ground breaking for Provo Temple.
Darlene sang in the Womens chorus and in the Oratorio choir. In High School
her family moved from a big city school of East High where she was active in
Seminary and Jr. Choir to Bingham High. Living in West Jordon, she continued
to sing in a girls quartet, which had won in the Jr. Division in Stake Church
competition 36 Ward. Also recieved honorable mention in the All-Church Quartet
finals. At Bingham High she won a speech contest and recieved a letter in
forensics and attended All-state competition. She continued her education part
time, off and on after marriage, between babies.
During the Vietnam War Steve's draft number was drawn, so he enlisted in the
Air Force just before graduation and became a linguist. He was sent to Lackland
AFB for basic training, where he was "dorm chief" and gave out 8 book of
Mormons his wife sent to him. He learned Russian, at Defense Language
Institure in Monterey, Calif. where the couple walked everywhere, since they
didn't have a car. Steven and Darlene and baby Adam rented a car and filled it
with all their posessions and travelled to Texas where they were active in
doing Missionary work while at technical School.
Three months later the little family visited N.C. for 2 weeks on leave then
on to Anchorage Alaska for 1st assignment. Next, there was an unexcepted
overseas assignment to Sinop, Turkey where Darlene, Adam and Seth flew over
later. Steve was LDS group leader and Darlene had the thrill of teaching
missionary lessons with Steve by candlelight while expecting her third child.
This was a time of mixed feelings, since Turkey was under martial law at the
time and armed Turkish guards were visible.
During the 7th month of pregnancy, the family was transferred to Ft. Meade
Maryland. They lived in Sub-standard base housing now as Staff Sargeant Hiatt
until after Nathan was born in a Baltimore hospital by LaMaze child birth (so
Steve could again see the baby be born). On base, fathers were not allowed in
the delivery room and mothers were heavily medicated, forceps used.
When Nathan was a few months old, Steve's time in the AF was up and they
moved to Az. where Steve began pursuing his Master Degree in Business
Administration. He also worked full time in the day setting up 8 new Short
Stop Markets and managing, training, hiring new employees. While Darlene was
expecting their 4th child, they moved into their brand new home in a nice Mesa
subdivision, thanks to the Veterans Administration loans.
After graduation Steve began working as a Health and Beauty Aids for ASSDC,
grocers, while teaching part-time at Williams Air Force Base. Amonumental
turning point came about after fasting and prayer and a dramatic hike on a
lone hill top. Steve was accepted as one of the 12 students admitted into the
Doctorate program at ASU and he quit his job to pursue his education full time.
His GPA was 3.47 not the required 3.5 so a special formal petition was made
and he presented himself before a committee. This course was not completed for
a long 7 years, but made his goals of being able to be free of spending time to
serve the Lord and with his family more possible later.
During the time in the Doctorate program, Darlene was more involved in
Natural childbirth and had the 5th child at home by a licensed Lay Midwife.
After completing course work, taking written exams, Steve secured a job
teaching at Kearney State College in Neb.
Darlene couldn't stand moving out of the 1st home they'd ever had where
Kathy was born, so she chose to look ahead and flew to Neb. and picked out
their new home with 2 preschoolers and a 5 month old baby.
While in Kearney, Steve flew back retook hi "Orals" as he'd been burned out
the 1st time and flunked. He'd finished in 2 1/2 years, while teaching as an
ASu graduate assistant also at Thunderbird Intnik school and for the AF Base in
different parts of the "Valley" During that time he'd put 500 miles a week on
his motorcyle, traveling the freeways to work on different nights of the week
in opposite ends of the valley.
When Darlene was expecting their 6th child she could not bring herself to
go to the Kearney Clinic anymore, remembering the personal care of Az Midwives.
The family decided to go back to Az so Steve could continue full time work on
his "Dissertation" or Thesis for his Doctorate Degree. Darlene flew to Az with
Seth and 3 year old Kathy and go a house rented for the family, who came by
U-Haul truck.
This made the 17th time they had moved during their marriage. Diana was
born at home with a midewife and the children except Kathy, saw her
born-kicking. 36 hours prior to the birth Darlene had been prompted by the
Holy Ghost to try and did successfully turn the baby out of the breech position
over a 2 hour painful maneuer by herself.
When Diana was 11 months old and Steve had presented his formal proposal and
had his dissertation approved the family again moved back to Kearney. They
began a group Family Associated Childbirth Experience (FACE) to promote
Midwives and baby Homebirths. The political group Family Assoc. Maternity
Experience or FAME was instrumental in making intital contacts with Sentators,
radio and T.W. and newspapers. This activity was subsequently turned over to
another larger better funded group in Lincoln. They were successful in
formulating and pushing thru new legislation legalizing certified Nurse
Midwives in Neb.
In Dec 1983 Steve flew to Az. to make the final presentation of his
dissertation and was gradiated with his Doctorate Degree in Business
Administration. The family had a big party and make a big sign which was
displayed on the house. Darlene had their 7th child within 4 weeks. They felt
uncomfortable with a home birth this time, due to Darlene's age and that it was
the 7th baby. Thankfully, a new doctor had set up private practice since the
last birth. He now was a woman doctor as his associate. A nwe birthing center
is soon to be added to the Hospital for family centered birth experiences.
Steve is now the director of the new MBA program at Kearney State College
and had been the foundation for establishing courses and the entire program.
The family has an interest in expanding their horizons and are looking forward
at family international opportunity, hopefully keeping the missionary years in
Germany in mind. With the family and Steve's education complete, Darlene is
thinking of more education in terms of social, psychology area. She rejected
the idea of becoming a midwife, due to the present conflict over medical
community safety at home and limiting educational slant towards hospitals. She
is enjoying the last child, Joshua Fredrick, immensely and loved the hospital
birthing chair and early release for home. (The doctor managed a large tear
well and controlled her bleeding immediately).
There 14 year old son, Adam is a paper boy, is saving for a mission and is
currently Teacher's Chorum Pres. and likes computers and is learning Spanish.
Soon to be 13 years old Seth is also a paper boy. Seth is Deacon Chorum
Pres and was an "All Star" little leaguer and is learning German.
Nathan is a former paper boy and helps a lot babysitting. He also plans on
a mission and at 11 1/2 has a good testimony and is a leader in class
discussions and good in Math.
Soon to be 10 years old Joy, always scores in the 98% on nationwide tests
and enjoys ballet in the past.
6 year old Kathy is a little mother in the family to her younger sister and
brother. She likes Kindergarten and makes little projects she invents at home.
Diana loves pre-school at 3 1/2 and talkes and sings fearlessly for others.
14 month old Joshua has an unusually good dispostions and has great
strengh in his arms. Already wearing size 3's we expect he'll follow his Dad
in sports later in life. He always had an affectionate squeeze, pat and
slobber kiss on the nose for us. He loves doggies.
Steve was saddeded by his fathers death from Leukemia a few years ago.
His mother re-married and is now living in the State of Wash.
