The Cooks had lived in Warren County, Ohio from 1803 to 1824 when they
moved to Greensboro Township, Henry County, Ind. Both the Hiatt's and Cook's
were members of the Duck Creek Meeting at Greensboro. The Hiatt's would have
traveled along the north edge of the Cook farm on their way to Meeting.
James and Betty Cook Hiatt lived on the land that Stephen Cook had bought
from the United States Government in 1821 and sold to Betty's father, Levi Cook in 1825. It was located in Wayne Township, Henry County, Ind. a mile southwest of Levi Cook's farm. It must have been James and Betty Hiatt who built the log house on a knoll overlooking the Blue River Valley. Part of his land reverted to the United States Government in the 1970's when Interstate Highway 70 was routed across the farm. The author's grandfather, Horace Hardin, was born in the log house.
James Hiatt died on 29 Spet 1841 leaving six children under twelve years of age. Two of James' brothers, Anthony and Absalom, and their sister, Hannah Burris, died about the same time also leaving small children. James' will was dated 14 Aug 1841 and probated 16 Oct 1841. Executors were Abner Pickering, James Snodgrass, and John H. Bales.
Betty managed to keep the six children together for a while. In 1844 John
Cook, Betty's brother was appointed their guardian. Betty Cook Hiatt died on
10 Mar 1848 in Henry Co., Ind. The six children were then eight to nineteen
years of age. They were taken into the home of John Cook and his wife,
Julianna Saint Cook who lived on the Levi Cook homestead.
