Philander Franklin Hiatt, John and Leonilla's eldest son, was born in 1834.
On January 25, 1857 when he was twenty-three years old, he married Mary Ann
Knight (born October 11, 1839) who lived in New Garden. Mary Ann was eighteen
years old when she and Philander were married. They live in a house located at
the intersection of High Point Road and Groomtown Road, on the right side of
the road. The land was part of the original 640 acre tract and was probably
given to Philander by his father John. The land is located a few miles
southwest of John's home. A picture of the house with Mary Ann standing in the
front yard shows a two level section made of logs with the upper portion
covered by boards. To the right of the two level section there is a one level
area. A chimney is shown at the end of each section. A porch crosses the
entire front of the house. There are doors opening from the porch to both
sections. Two small windows open into the one level section, one large window
into the two level section, plus a small window on the second floor. The roof
is made of wooden shingles. The house is not listed as Philander's property on
the 1908 map. The only dwelling in the vicinity is referred to as W.P.
Bowman's. Perhaps the house was sold to Bowman after Mary Ann's death in 1899.
Philander and Mary Ann had eleven children. Two of the children, William
Clarkston and Mattie Caroline, died in infancy. William Clarkton was four
years old, and Mattie Caroline was two.
During the Civil War, Philander served in the Confederate Army. He was
conscripted on November 4, 1864 just a few months before the war ended in April
of 1865. He was assigned to Company I, 38th Regiment of North Carolina Troops.
At the time he was thirty years old. On the conscription list his age is
stated as 29, and his occupation is listed as laborer. He deserted on February
8, 1865 and was captured or turned himself to the Union Army of the Potomac.
He took the Oath of Amnesty at city Point, Virginia. On the Oath of Amnesty he
is described as having a light complexion, dark hair, and blue eyes and being
five feet six inches talls.
Philander died in 1888, when he was 54 years old. Mary Anne died on
November 20, 1899 when she was 62 years old. Both are buried in New Garden
Cem.
John Rufus, the eldest child and first son, was born in 1858, the year
after Philander and Mary Ann were married. John married Ella Otwell and moved
to eastern North Carolina, Clinton, where he operated a livery stable. John
and Ella had two children, Houston B. and Grace (February 24, 1885) who died
when she was a child. She is buried in the plot in New Garden Cemetery with
her grandparents. John Rufus died in 1911, when he was 53 years old. Houston
B. never married.
Emma Elizabeth, Philander and Mary Ann's eldest daughter and fourth child,
was born in 1862. She married William Jennings by whom she had two children,
William and Lillian. Emma Elizabeth died in 1906, when she was 54 years old.
Her son William Jennings married Mary Hodgin by whom he had 3 children.
Marriage information sent by Marjorie Smith, found in North Carolina
